So, my questions are… what am I doing to the boot process by continuously pressing F6? Should this be necessary and can it be avoided? How do I get the Conky to report the missing data? Thank you for indulging my ignorance.

The info for battery, trash, upload, download all show zeroes. The information on cpu, ram, and hard drive are there. However, the information in the ‘Conky’ is incomplete. After pressing numerous keys during bootup I have found that if I continuously press F6 during the process I get what appears to be a complete boot up… no black screen, and the applications seem to work appropriately. On my system I can’t find any reference to a ‘light locker’ and I see no option for selecting a ‘nomodeset’. Reading various forums I saw references to various ‘fixes’, ie, holding a shift key during the boot process, pressing F6 during the boot process, pressing ‘Esc’, pressing any key, invoking the grub options and selecting ‘nomodeset’, and something about a ‘light locker’. I know the operating system loads because I hear the audio announcement (sounds like a somewhat detuned car horn). After the installation I experienced what many have also reported, a blank or black screen. I did not keep the M$ Vista operating system.

In an attempt to extend the life of my Dell Mini 10, and exasperated by the constant M$ ‘updates’, I experimented with LXLE live on a thumb drive. First, my apologies for what I suspect will be a long first post.
